This protocol is used for a very basic level of connectivity providing data linkage between the computers. When more than two computers need to communicate with one another the number of connections grows very quickly as number of computer increases. Point to point topology is the simplest topology that connects two nodes directly together with a common link. Often multiple routes of different length are possible so routing algorithms play an important role in point to point networks. The point to point connections use an actual length of wire or cable to connect the two ends but other options such as satellite links or microwaves are also possible. Topologies may define both physical and logical aspect of the network. It can provide connection authentication transmission encryption and compression.

Both logical and physical topologies could be same or different in a same network. The entire bandwidth of the common link is reserved for transmission between those two nodes. Network topology is the topological structure of the computer network. A network topology is the arrangement with which computer systems or network devices are connected to each other.

As a general rule although there are many exceptions smaller geographically localized networks tend to use broadcasting whereas larger networks usually are point to point. Point to point is sometimes abbreviated as p2p. The term is also used in computer networking and computer architecture to refer to a wire or other connection that links only two computers or circuits as opposed to other network topologies such as buses or crossbar switches which can connect many communications devices. Point to point network topology is a simple topology that displays the network of exactly two hosts computers servers switches or routers connected with a cable.
